Recent seasons have seen something of a reinvention in fashion. Where once we’d see only the highest of heels lined up on the front row, comfort is cool again and flats are back. Last season was all about the sneaker but there is only one style you need for AW16 and that’s the classic loafer.

This preppy and masculine shoe is top of the list of those we need in our wardrobe's this winter, replacing the ballet pump as our go-to flat shoe of the season. Street style's biggest stars opted for their comfort at September's fashion weeks but there's nothing new about this style classic.

Whilst the loafer is set to be seen on only the chicest of feet this autumn/winter, its history is altogether more utilitarian. Back in 1936, George Henry Bass of G.H. Bass & Co was tasked by the editor of Esquire magazine to create a stylish spin on the traditional Norwegian farm shoe. Bass did so, dubbing the shoes ‘Weejuns’ in a playful spin on ‘Norwegian’, and so the world was introduced to its very first penny loafer.

The preppy style soon caught the attention of stylists and celebrities, with everyone from Michael Jackson to President John Kennedy sending the shoe soaring into significance. But this wasn’t just one for the boys; Audrey Hepburn wore G.H. Bass & Co Weejuns for one of the most iconic scenes in her career, when she danced in the 1957 film Funny Face, and Grace Kelly was photographed wearing Weejuns in one of the final shoots of her career, as promotion for To Catch A Thief, shortly before she retired to become a fully-fledged princess.

Today, G.H. Bass & Co Weejuns have never been more fashionable and we’re thrilled to bring the original and best penny loafer brand to our boutique. But how should you wear yours? Here are five ways for AW16.

Take the preppiest shoe on the planet and turn it on its head by pairing with black ripped jeans and a leather jacket.

Work the high-low fashion rule and wear your Weejuns with mini skirts and short pinafore dresses for evening

Weejuns are the perfect office shoe. Simply add cropped chinos or black trousers, a white shirt and layer with a cashmere jumper.

Make like Alexa Chung – fashion’s most steadfast loafer lover – and wear yours with Sixties style shift dresses, keeping your hemline high

The camel coat is this season’s outwear must have. Layer yours with an all-black outfit and black Weejuns.
