Could Mulberry win the award for the cutest Christmas advert of 2016? If a cast of kids and the writer behind The Grand Budapest Hotel have anything to do with it, they just might do that.

Today saw the release of part one of Mulberry’s Christmas 2016 video, which sees a straight-laced mother, bickering sisters and secretive son gather for a traditional British Christmas.

Speaking to Drapers about the advert, Mulberry creative director Johnny Coca said: “When I was a kid, all that I wanted to do was to be grown up so I could be like my dad. Now that I am an adult, I just want to be a kid again. Christmas brings out the kid in all of us, and this is what I love about using children to tell our story this year.”

Part one of the the Mulberry Christmas tale ends with the older sister, Rose, giving her own beloved Mulberry Bayswater bag to her younger sister, wrapping it in leftover scraps of paper as that is all she has available to her so last-minute. And so Mulberry’s seasonal slogan ‘It’s what’s inside that counts’ starts to make perfect sense.

The second part of the advert will be released later this month, so stay tuned. In the meantime you can see part one of Mulberry’s Christmas 2016 video here
