It’s official; we have entered into that awkward stage between winter warmers and spring’s bare arms and ankles. It’s times like these when layering shoots straight to the top of your style agenda and we’re coming to the rescue with our five failsafe layering tricks for navigating the British weather once the coats are cast into storage until the same time next year.

·             The mac is your new best friend. It was designed to weather the April showers and it looks damn good doing so. If one doesn’t feature in your wardrobe, you’re missing a layering trick that will never let you down.

·             Cardigans aren’t just for your Nanna. Chunky knits rival coats in terms of warmth, meaning you can wear those new season styles sooner than you thought. If you’re partial to longer length cardies, wear them open with a Mulberry plaited belt wrapped around to define your waist and show off your outfit underneath.

·             Once upon a time, denim jackets triggered memories of B*Witched that we had hoped would stay buried right at the back of our minds. Fortunately, they have redeemed themselves to become a game-changer in the art of layering. Extra style points for wearing yours with your Jacob Cohen jeans. Double denim has never been so cool.

·             Dressing for the switch in seasons doesn’t mean relegating all of your winter wear to the back of the wardrobe. Your ankle boots have served you well with opaque tights and they’ll go the distance with bare legs too now things are heating up. Okay, okay, things WILL be heating up once the Beast goes back to the East.

·             Black polo necks are about to become one with your wardrobe. Gossamer thin knits might not feel like much between your fingers but they’re all you need to make your favourite summer slip dresses wearable in more wintery conditions. Just throw your Belstaff leather over the top to complete the look.

With the first Bank Holiday of the year just weeks away and the unfaltering tendency for them to err on the wet side, we’re preparing to weather the storm in new season outerwear by Belstaff.

While they may be famed for their luxury leathers, the British heritage brand has its origins in highly technical, functional clothing that stems from an understanding of innovative fabrics. Which, to cut a long story short, means Belstaff do wet weather appropriate attire better than any other brand knows how. Knitting together form and function to inextricably combine the two, Belstaff quilted and puffer jackets shun rainbow brights in favour of soft neutrals in earthy tones, creating April shower saviours to weather the storms without sacrificing an ounce of style.

This is outwear designed for life. For cold commutes on a Monday morning and long walks on a Sunday afternoon. Lightweight, hardwearing and breathable; the Hamford and Randall down-filled quilted jackets by Belstaff are the wet weather wonders and much beyond. In soft sand shades they’ll stay classic and wearable whatever the spring trends bring.

Is it even summer without stripes? They are a summer style perennial, a print we turn to when the weather warms up and the coats come off. Nothing says summer afternoons on the French Riviera quite like them and for one of the simplest prints of the season, they have impact that never fails to impress. There is nothing new about stripes but therein lies their appeal. Classic and contemporary in equal measure, they create looks that won’t date the holiday snaps or have us wondering what on earth we were thinking when we tapped into a trend.

Our favourite spring/summer stripes come courtesy of a brand better known for its leathers. British heritage favourites, Belstaff, are already our go-to for luxury leather jackets and they bring the same simple styling and great quality to clothing too. The Federica top and trousers co-ordinating set wouldn’t look out of place on the shores of St Tropez.

The first snow of the year has fallen and it is officially big coat season. Your coat is the most important item of clothing you will wear all winter, and probably the most expensive thing you’ll buy all season, so we’re on hand to make sure you choose wisely when it comes to outerwear that is capable of weathering all storms.

First up is the formal single-breasted style that is currently experiencing a resurgence by order of the Peaky Blinders. The popularity of the Birmingham boys has seen vintage inspired, gentlemanly styling return to the forefront of fashion and the single-breasted coat is a surprisingly wearable way to tap into the trend. As smart with your suit as it is casual with your cosy knits, the long-line will lengthen the body and a slim cut will flatter. If you’re harbouring a secret man crush on Mr Shelby, as we all are at the moment, a single-breasted jacket by the likes of Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss will replicate his stylish swagger and bring his vintage look bang up to date for you to take into the new season.

Next on the list is the Belstaff leather. Luxury heritage leathers from the British stars of styling are top of our Christmas list, thanks to their undulating appeal season after season. Of course, all Belstaff leathers aren’t created equal. There’s the Harley Davidson-ready Weybridge with its biker styling and there is the Trialmaster with its country casual cut, practical pockets and longer line, to name but two of our favourite styles. The beauty of a Belstaff is that you will love it as much in ten winters’ time as you do this December.

Finally, we have the padded jacket or the puffa as they were better known in the Nineties. Fortunately, the cosy style has come a long way since the days of East 17 and all. There’s an effortless edge to streetwear inspired styles like the padded jacket that makes it our go-to for days when we need to look smart without wasting time and effort on outfit planning. The padded jacket looks cool and keeps you warm; we’re looking to Ralph Lauren for ours this winter.
